Picks of the Month: May 2014

Picks of the Month is my monthly feature. Modeled after what I’m loving lately at Annie’s Eats (one of my favorite food blogs), I’ll be sharing the products, websites, pop culture, apps, etc that made my life easier and/or more fun the previous month. And, yes, as this is a book blog, I will probably find a way to sneak some mention of my favorite reads from the month too!

Smart Gardener
Smart Gardener is a garden planning website that I use to keep track of my plants and my watering schedule, and as a guide to when my vegetables might be ready for harvest. They have several add-ons. I’m considering buying the one for berries.

Sansa Clip

I bought a Sansa Clip for running a few years ago. I have an old iPod Shuffle, but I wanted the Clip because it has a display and I can choose what I want to listen to instead of random songs/podcasts/audiobooks or going in order. Sometimes I might want to listen to an audiobook; other times I want to hear music. I can do that more easily with the Clip.

After a year or so of use, the clip part of the Clip broke off, so I had a clipless Sansa Clip. It was annoying, but I made do. (Pockets!) I found out on Google that it’s a pretty common problem. It’s plastic and it’s not as sturdy as the iPod Shuffle’s clip. I was going to try out a solution I found to repair it, using a mini clothespin to replace the broken clip. I never got around to it, though, and late last month, I noticed that the OLED display was suddenly a lot harder to read than it used to be. It got progressively dimmer over a few days and I started seeing imprints of the previous screens. I did some more Googling and found a couple of things to try, but they didn’t work. Basically it works but there’s no display so I can’t choose what I want to hear. Which was kind of the point of having it over the iPod. They’re not that expensive and I got a good few years out of it, so I ordered a new one from Amazon.

Orange is the New Black
We got a Blu-ray player that streams Netflix late last year. We had quit Netflix earlier in the year, but always intended to sign up again. We finally did in April, and I immediately started watching Orange is the New Black. LOVE IT! Season 2 will be on Netflix on June 6. I should be finished with the first season by then.
