I took an unexpected hiatus. I was busy with work the week of Thanksgiving and then that weekend we took one of our cats, Brigitta, to the emergency vet. She was admitted and stayed there until Monday morning (they’re only open nights/weekends/holidays — when regular vets are closed) when we moved her to the regular vet’s office. By that time she had improved a great deal and the vet was comfortable with leaving her there Monday night even though no one (humans) would be there to keep an eye on her. When we initially took her in, she was dehydrated and constipated and very lethargic. They put her on fluids immediately and did some bloodwork and discovered her kidneys are failing. This is very common in older cats (she’s 13). There are ways to manage it for a time, so on Tuesday afternoon I learned how to give her subcutaneous fluids WITH A NEEDLE IN HER SKIN. It’s a little scary, but not nearly as bad as I expected. She doesn’t seem to mind it at all, other than having to sit still while the fluids go in. We have to do that a couple of times a week, as well as give her oral medication daily. Our other cat has had to take medication a couple of times and I don’t know if we ever successfully got a full dose into her. Brigitta isn’t happy about it but doesn’t fight it quite as much.
She’s also on a special prescription kidney diet, which means the cats are on different foods and have to get used to eating when we give them food instead of grazing all day and night they way they have their whole lives. It’s an adjustment, but they don’t seem to mind too much.
Unfortunately, during all of this I didn’t have too many posts ready to go and I wasn’t feeling up to writing many new ones. I plan on taking another hiatus at the end of the month to try to get a little ahead with reviews and other posts.
Books I Acquired: I’m not sure. I didn’t really keep track, although I do think I bought a few the week of Thanksgiving. I did a little online Black Friday and Cyber Monday shopping, but I didn’t know I didn’t buy any books those days. I need to start using the coupons Barnes & Noble keeps sending me. I was actually going to stop in there this week, but the roads weren’t great because of the snow we got.
