Feature & Follow Friday

Feature & Follow is a weekly blog hop hosted by Alison Can Read and Parajunkee.

Q: If you could only have ONE – one book – for the rest of your life. Don’t cheat…what would it be?

That is a super hard question. There are a lot of books that I love, but I don’t really have one single favorite book. That would make it easy.

While I guess my true answer would be The Bible, I want to pick a YA book because this is a YA book blog. I will choose The Cheerleader by Ruth Doan MacDougall.

Here is what it was like to grow up in the 1950s in the years of ponytails, pajama parties, proms, and “parking”, when to be popular was important and when, if you were a girl, being important meant being a cheerleader. THE CHEERLEADER is a best-selling novel about the loss of innocence, the growth of passion, and the awakening of ambition.

The reprint of this classic coming-of-age novel features a foreword by English professor Ann V. Norton, who writes, “As Snowy grows in mind and heart, she realizes she must develop her own self. That this realization happens in a small town in the 1950s to a cheerleader, symbol of a girl’s simultaneous success and subordination, makes it all the more powerful.

The Cheerleader transcends its setting to portray a young person’s timeless yearning for a full and satisfying life.”

This book is amazing. I remember being scandalized by the parking when I read it as a young teenager. I thought good girls in the 1950s didn’t do those things. I wish I had my copy handy so I could pull out some quotes, but it’s somewhere in one of my disorganized bookshelves and I couldn’t find it when I went looking for it.

But trust me. AH-MAZ-ING.

(Incidentally, my review for one of its sequels, Henrietta Snow, will be up on Monday. That’s not why I chose the book to answer this question though.)
